Update on MBWF Annual Planning Meeting

We had a great planning meeting last week!

Fiona Bevan has womanfully volunteered to organise the next year’s programme of monthly workshops and Anita Collier is going to organise our January dinner.  Many thanks to Jane Pyatt, Penny Welsh & Anne Linham who have carried out these roles over the past year.

Nicky Francis has said that whilst she’s willing to carry on maintaining the membership list and managing communications with members, she’s more than happy to hand this job over if someone who wasn’t at the meeting would like to get more involved in organising the group – please contact Nicky directly and she can explain what’s involved.

Pam Zelly is happy to keep looking after the cash, but Buddy Drescher will now be issuing your membership invoices.

Jennie Wood will produce and issue press releases on behalf of MBWF and keep our virtual presence up to date but she needs us all to provide her with raw material…… We agreed that rather than have a designated ‘review writer’, we would ask for a volunteer at each meeting who will write a review of that meeting and also find out some information about the next meeting (we are developing a template to make this easier!).

There were some suggestions for enhancements to our cool new web site (thanks to Helen Mercer designing & implementing this) and also suggestions for some other fun things that we might do outside the monthly meeting format (volunteers will be needed to organise these!).

So, whilst we have volunteers for all the jobs necessary to keep MBWF functioning, there’s always more that could be done:  Fiona would love to hear from anyone who would like to have a go at chairing meetings (great experience for those who’ve never done it before, and you couldn’t hope to find a more receptive and friendly audience to practice on).  And I’m sure that Anita will welcome some support in organising the dinner.

Feng Shui for business

Our next event is on 4th March 2010, with a talk given by Maggie Mckerron who has provided the following preview:

Feng Shui is about balance, order and harmony. When searching for balance we can stumble on Feng Shui. But to make it easier, there are a few guidelines we can follow which I will share with you, including some special ones for business. I learned from a Thai expert practitioner in Black Hat Feng Shui.  The good news is you don’t have to change everything immediately to get results.  In fact that could plunge your life into chaos!  Try one area first, wait 3 days and see what happens.  Enjoy the process.  Be creative.  Reap the benefits!

If you are interested in attending this event, please contact Nicky Francis

Tackling Christmas

Mendip Business women got Christmas off to a good start at Divas Café at the Black Swan Arts Centre in Frome on December 3rd.

Jane Kitchen of Changepoints led a spirited session on getting through the festive season in fine style, accompanied by outstanding mince pies and mulled wine created by Leah Mercer.

The group pooled its hints and tips for enjoying and getting through Christmas and Jane demonstrated a technique for dealing with difficult people, using a brave volunteer.

There was also a lively discussion on how to change your emotional state, with members adding their own suggestions.

Overall, a thought-provoking and enjoyable session and it will be interesting to hear reports of how the festive season went for those who attended, when we meet again in January for our annual dinner!

Shadow Play – our next event – 06.10.09

How was it possible that such a remarkable man born into such violently volatile times should apparently make no comment about the state of England in his work? He did – but it was hidden. Clare Asquith traces the common code used by dissident writers in the sixteenth century to discuss the tribulations of their time, and demonstrates that the acknowledged master of this forgotten art form was William Shakespeare.

Visit www.mendipbusinesswomen.co.uk to find out more about the group and other upcoming events.

We aim to meet at 7.30pm for each of our monthly meetings and the speaker commences at 7.50.

Visitors are very welcome to try before they buy and attend occasional meetings for a cost of £10.00 (refundable against membership). If you would like to attend or find out more, please email or call Kim on 01749 677597.

Social media for business

Our September meeting’s focus was on Social Online Media or Web 2.0, with a talk given by Jennie Wood of Frome-based PR consultancy, Avalanche Media.

The evening focussed on social media for business and offered an anecdotal and research-driven look at how organisations can use it to boost awareness.

The talk focussed on the application, rather than the practicals of using social media (these are relatively straight forward once you get started!).  To find out more, read the notes on Jennie Wood’s blog

Dangerous women…

How good are you at spotting a dangerous WOMAN?   And what would you do if such a woman targeted your son, a friend or a work colleague?  Have you been a victim of one yourself?  What happened?

At our next event on 5th August 2009 Roy Sheppard, former BBC reporter, will share findings from his book “Venus: The Dark Side” which he co-authored with Mary T Cleary, a world respected authority on domestic abuse perpetrated by dangerous women.

Not all abuse is physical – as we will hear.  Spotting these women can be quite straight forward when you know what you’re looking for…

Please note:  Heather Mills will not be in attendance.

If you won’t be holidaying in the first week of August and would like to come along to hear Roy on the evening of the 5th, we’ll be meeting at our regular Wells venue – Nutriheal.  To register your interest and receive directions, please contact Nicky Francis by email:  nicky.francis@googlemail.com

We look forward to welcoming you!
